🌾
Many people think of pellets when they think of degu food,
but herbs are actually the most important part of a healthy daily diet. 🍃
In the wild, degus spend hours nibbling on a wide variety of plants such as stems, leaves and flowers. Offering dried herbs helps mimic that natural foraging behavior and keeps their digestion and teeth in balance.
Why Herbs Matter
🍂
• They are full of fiber for healthy digestion.
• They help the molars wear down naturally.
• They add variety, enrichment and natural nutrients.
Safe and Popular Herbs
🌼
Plantain, dandelion, nettle, raspberry leaves, willow leaves, marigold, chamomile, rose petals, clover, hibiscus, mint, lemon balm and many more
Variety is Key
🌀
Each plant has unique properties. Strong herbs like sage, thyme or mint are medicinal in large amounts, while milder ones such as dandelion or plantain are safe for daily feeding.
For a balanced mix, offer at least fifteen to twenty different herbs at a time. This prevents overdosing on any single plant and keeps your degus engaged and happy.
Fresh is Best, But Dried is Easier
🍀
Fresh herbs provide more nutrients and help the teeth wear faster, but dried herbs are perfect for busy days because they store well and still offer plenty of natural variety. Dried herbs cannot replace fresh herbs, though.
In short:
Dried herbs are not just a luxury. They are an essential part of a natural, healthy degu diet.
The more diversity, the better!
